Dear Friends,
I know you will be concerned for news of our children and staff in China as they cope with the very stressful situations caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Although Changsha is hundreds of kilometres from the epicentre in Wuhan, the province (Hunan) is next to Hubei (where Wuhan is located) and there are confirmed cases in Changsha.
I am in daily touch with the staff in the Butterfly Home and receiving updates about the children’s conditions. Although they have the usual fevers, coughs and colds, none of them are showing undue symptoms causing further concern, and we have no staff with any symptoms.
The Changsha SWI (orphanage) and Chinese government have implemented strict controls on travel and visitors to the Butterfly Home and Butterfly Wing. Some of our staff are having extended holiday and others will work from home, so isolation precautions are in place.
However you will be aware that the situation is changing daily and is quite frightening for the staff and their families, particularly as supplies of items like surgical masks are very low and now unobtainable in China and many adjacent countries.
I was going to China on February 12th but in view of all travel advice and the strict isolation precautions in the orphanage, I have had to postpone that trip until the situation improves. I am sad about this as I know the staff could do with more than conference call support at this very difficult time.
We are trying to find ways to encourage the staff, – little gifts of hand-creams today! – and I know they will be in your thoughts.
Please also pray for our staff and children – that they will have peace and good health and of course for a quick resolution to the situation generally in China and good recovery for all those already affected.
