Matilda and William have begun a whole new adventure. William was a tiny baby when he arrived here, Matilda was an older child. But they each arrived fighting for their lives.
Now, they have no need to fight. They are both thriving, growing stronger and learning new things each day. They each have cerebral palsy, and this limits their mobility, communication and fine motor skills. But it doesn’t limit their ability to love or to smile or to reach out and find their place in the world. They are not palliative care patients anymore. They are strong, joyful and ready to live.
Recently we had a farewell party for them, with the usual banners and cakes and that crazy-hard-to-organize, but so-worth-it group photo. It was a time to celebrate all their achievements and look forward to their bright future. It was really a celebration of miracles. Lyn, our CEO felt overwhelmed with joy – she spent many nights with William counting every breath when he was a baby , and she wondered if she would ever see that day that he was well enough to graduate. And now that day was around the corner!
Unfortunately Matilda’s wheelchair has been delayed due to logistics of getting specialised parts from halfway around the world. As soon as it is here, it will be going directly to ICC for her. We’ve had word that it has touched down in Hong Kong – and it looks fabulous! So it won’t be long until she has her new wheels … in her new home. She’s going to love the pink.
And this week – the big moving day finally arrived. Matilda and William are now officially part of the International China Concern family – our wonderful friends who care for disabled children and adults with love and diligence.
ICC focus on preparing children for a sustainable and purposeful life, teaching life and vocational skills. Children can stay with them into adulthood, in assisted living facilities within the community. It’s a wonderful opportunity for Matilda and William, though we know they might be a little nervous at first. We are glad they have each other as they go through this transition. They will be staying together in a sweet little shared room. And they are close enough for us to visit often.
Our staff are thrilled for them. Of course there’s a little bit (OK – a lot) of sorrow in there too – they have been such a special part of our Home. But we’ve known for a while that these children are ready to fly. So its meaningful to see those balloons on their new wall – reminding us that our Butterflies are heading for the sky. We’re so proud of them.
