Everyone deserves a second chance. In the past, we have watched with wonder as our ‘second chance’ kids spread their wings and took off into the world. Remember sad little Michael, who came to us after a failed surgery? Apparently he had run out of chances – except that he hadn’t. Michael’s surgical journey was much longer and more complicated than anybody planned, but it ended with a spectacular result. Michael is now healthy, smart, tender and funny and his adoring family delight in him. He’s a wonderful big brother to Robert (also a Butterfly boy).
It took more than a second chance for Michael to get to that place – think second, third and fourth. But today, his shining smile reminds us that we all deserve another chance. And Finlay? Finlay with his inoperable heart condition, is now healthy and active. He recently won the A-for-Adventurous award at summer camp. We are so proud of him!
Our ‘second chance’ boys are amazing – they are living, loving and thriving. Now Joseph is another sweet boy who needs a second chance.
He travelled to Shanghai in December for a surgery which was supposed to do great things. We were devastated when it didn’t go to plan. Surgery is like that sometimes – each child is unique, their anatomy is different and their body heals in different ways. For Joseph, this was devastating. Instead of being healed, he came home with a new label: “inoperable”.
We don’t see ‘inoperable’ when we look at Joseph. We see ‘amazing’, ‘courageous’ and ‘worthy’. He is a delightful baby – sunny and observant with such a sparkle in his eyes. You cannot meet this boy and not fall in love. You cannot meet him and turn away.
We are thrilled that a wonderful surgeon we have previously worked with is willing to take on Joseph’s complicated case. We understand there are no guarantees – this is a tough situation, and we can’t pretend it will all be a walk in the park.
But we can’t give up on this kid either. We can’t stand by and watch Joseph struggle while we do nothing. Every child deserves a second chance. Please visit this link to help us make that happen for Joseph.
