Reflections from Jea

Jea was one of our long term nurses from the Philippines, who has now returned home. She took a moment to share some reflections on the impact working in the Butterfly Home has had for her.

“Butterfly Children’s Hospices has made a great impact in my life not just by being a nurse but as a whole human being. Before I became a part of Butterfly’s family, I thought of making changes in other peoples lives, but it turns out that my life has changed as well. It was the greatest achievement I ever had in my entire nursing career and as a human. As a Filipino, being a palliative nurse is a path less taken and palliative nursing is not widely practiced in the Philippines. Having this experience made me understand more about life, being loved, and to love. It made me understand situations even if it’s hard and most important, it made me more sensitive to other peoples’ feelings especially with children who are unable to express themselves.

Every child is unique and every child deserves to be loved. That is the greatest lesson I learned as I saw our butterfly kids daily and as I took care of them. It was a humbling experience to be able to take care of our Butterfly kids, and it was a one of a kind experience that I will treasure forever.”
